white boys who respond to criticism of racism and sexism by ominously saying that there are ‘bigger problems’ scare me. like what is this big secret problem and why won’t anyone tell me about it? are we going to be eaten alive by mutant sharks? are oranges secretly poisoning us? who knows. the white boys, apparently.
Anonymous asked: I'm curious as to why you would be interested in american history because its notoriously fucking evil
yeah, i definitely believe that american history contains a lot of reaaaally shameful things.
but so does the history of japan and the history of great britain (and… basically every other nation in the world) and tumblr seems to celebrate the shit out of those countries so
(a) What does it mean that a nation’s history is evil?
The word evil can only be applied to actions, so we could consider the actions of either historical figures or historians (who become historical figures as time passes). As for historical figures, we could talk about major political and economic decision makers, but we could talk also about nearly endless numbers of groups and sub-groups of people. Of course there’s the qualifier “notorious” which means “recognizably bad to enough people,” so my judgment is that we’re talking about large-scale, well-documented evil: decisions made by influential people who feature prominently in the story of the United States. In that case…
(b) How does anything being “evil” eliminate the validity or value of being interested in it?
The United States has its national sins: slavery and the slave trade, displacement and massacre of native peoples, wartime internment of citizens, disfranchisement and denial of human rights, and so on. These were evils committed by people with power against people without, and the nation will be grappling with the legacies of those evils for a long time to come. It is imperative that we remember these things so that we are able to understand our present as best we can and make the best decisions we can. It is our interest in all of these things, these things that are part of our history, that keeps them part of the national memory.
The very worst response to evil is lack or loss of interest.
to be completely honest I’ve never seen somebody genuinely bullying cis people but I see a new “stop bullying cis people!” post every week
